Background information
The Potato was initiated into Ireland as the staple crop in the early 1800's. It was very well suited to Ireland's climate, and produced a higher yield than wheat. In 1845, a blight devastated the potato crop. The people of the time period did not know the cause of it; but within 5 years, the Irish population had been reduced by a quarter.
