Process Paper
We chose the Irish Potato Famine of 1845 for our topic. We chose this topic
because we are both very interested in Irish history. The Irish Potato Famine
was one of the most important turning point in all of Irish History. In
past years, we have chosen projects such as baseball or skateboarding and how
they affected history, but this is the first actual event in history we have
done. Those past topics have been very interesting to us, but we felt like
there was something that we really wanted to research. We now realize what that
topic is, and it is past hardships and how the people that lived it got through
it. That is why this topic is perfect for us.
We conducted our research through going to the library and carefully selecting some
books to read up on the Irish Potato Famine. We also searched the internet for
facts about our topic, we made sure that every source we used was reliable, and
had good credentials. Most of our sources are primary sources, such as newspaper
articles from the time period and letters from some of the people that lived
through the famine. These primary sources help us have a better understanding
of what life was like during the time of this famine.
We both have experience in creating websites, and we really enjoy using
the Weebly website creator, it is easy to use and it creates a very professional
looking website. We set apart times in our busy schedule to sit on computers
near each other and collaborate to create a visually stunning representation of
our project. We felt like we could express the importance of the Irish Potato
Famine better through a website than any other type of project.
This topic relates extremely well to the theme of Turning Points in History. The
Irish Potato Famine of 1845 was one of the greatest turning points in the
history of Ireland, as well as affecting the rest of the world. It caused many
deaths in Ireland. Potatoes that were exported to other countries were infected,
which made it so that other countries could not grow potatoes. The famine made
many people move to different countries so that they could grow their crops. It
also changed the relations between Ireland and other countries such as England,
and France. It changed the way that agriculture is produced, as well as the
different types of crops used.
